In order to simulate realistic virtual environments and provide the illusion of moving through those environ- ments, scientists in the Cyberneum use a variety of different hardware setups and software libraries.

Two motion simulators (RoboLab and MotionLab) allow persons to be physically moved through virtual environ- ments simulating the motion of driving cars and flying helicopters, for example. In the large room of the Tracking Lab, experiments are conducted in which participants can walk through and explore extensive virtual worlds that are displayed via head-mounted displays. The half-spherical screen of the PanoLab allows the simulation of large visual fields providing an increased degree of immersion.

The ve-Lib - a software library developed at the MPI - is used to drive the different hardware setups and to allow easy designing of psychophysical experiments. Finally, Virtual Tuebingen - a large, highly realistic virtual model of the old town of Tübingen - is used to investigate per- ception of space and strategies for navigation in large environments.
